Maritime law, which is often referred to as admiralty law, is a fundamental branch of law that regulates commerce and navigation on the seas or other navigable waters. It covers a broad spectrum of matters such as the development of legislation, both nationally and internationally; customs and excise regulations; the fishing industry; human rights and employment issues usually relating to the crew; insurance claims; property damage; the implications of stowaways on vessels; pollution; personal injuries; wreck and salvage; piracy; and container and passenger liner matters, etc. – Source: (“What is Maritime Law and what is its function..??”, Kavisha Baboolal).

2.5 year (7 semesters)

Entry Requirement

1. A pass in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) with at least credit THREE (3) including Malay, English and History; OR

2. A pass in Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), with a minimum of Grade C (GP 2.0) in any subject; or any equivalent qualification; OR

3. A pass in STAM with a minimum grade of Maqbul (pass); OR

4. A pass in Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM) Level 3 in a related field, and a pass in SPM with a minimum of 1 credit in any subject; OR

5. Any qualifications equivalent to Certificate (Level 3, MQF)

Industry Focus

This programme is designed to provide knowledge and understanding of Maritime Law which is significant for the effectiveness of maritime transportation operations. This Diploma programme emphasizes on the importance of law and regulation compliance in the end-to-end process of maritime transportation. It also explores the efficiency of the process that affects the successful delivery of cargo to its destination from the legal standpoint.

Programme Content

Developed in-sync with the needs of the maritime industry for competent maritime law practitioners, the programme is targeted to supply professionals not only for the local maritime clusters, but also for the global maritime supply chain industry. The programme is designed for those with and without previous law knowledge or experience, who wish to embark on careers in maritime law and legislation.

Assessment: The programme is assessed through assignments, presentations, quiz, test (coursework), practical, projects, field exercises, other forms of classroom participation and written examination. 

Key career skills: Business inclination, good communication skill, good report writing ability, problem solving, presentation, project management, teamwork, decision making and willingness to learn.
